The show is called Uncomfortable Conversations and along with 14 other designers we've all created something in hope of provoking an awkward situation. For the show we've designed five typographical posters showing how thoughtless font choices and poor letter and word spacing can create an unintended message. This weekend we went to check out an art gallery in Brooklyn called Minus Space. From outside you wouldn't know it's there but if you buzz Minus Space you'll be let into the warehouse and the tiny studio. Right now they have Josef Albers' album covers on display. Didn't actually know that he had made these so it was a nice surprise. They change the exhibitions about once a month so check out the website to see what's going on.

I'm thrilled to see that Goldfrapp is coming out with a new album in March! And as usual, the cover art is in it's true 70's psychedelic romantic style. I'm not sure who designed the cover (anyone know?) but it might be the great Mat Maitland again as he's designed all their previous artwork. I'm sure Alison Goldfrapp had a hand in it as she usually does. Now I'm just hoping they'll be out touring soon!

I'm really longing for Christmas now, especially when I hear that they have snow back home in Sweden. My brother sent me a picture of this years Christmas tree, every year we have a new theme for our the tree: old fashion with brown paper and string, red and white, nature, pink and this year black and white. I was at Ikea this weekend and saw some adorable Swedish ornaments for the tree. So I've decided that next years theme will be authentic Swedish and kurbits.

Yesterday I was at AIGA for their 50 books / 50 covers exhibition.

Since 1923, AIGA's "50 Books/50 Covers" competition has recognized excellence in book design and production. This exhibition showcases selections from the 50 Books/50 Covers of 2008 competition, which aims to identify the best-designed books and book covers published in 2008.

There were some really great layout ideas to be found, unfortunately everyone had to gather around a tiny bookshelf in the middle of the room were all the books were displayed, so I don't know if I saw them all. But here are some good ones (I forgot to write down the designers, so if anyone knows who's done what, let me know!).

Since the holidays are coming up there have been a handful of arts and crafts markets taking place in New York. This weekend I was at one in Soho brought together by Etsy. There were loads of talented designers with so many creative ideas there, unfortunately (for them) it just makes me want to go home and start working on my own projects. Wearing Whitman's Words

On Saturday I went to Wearing Whitman's Words: A Typographic Exploration at the Lucky Gallery. As explained on the site:
These designers were asked to make selections from Leaves of Grass to visually explore letter forms. The designed words will be displayed on the front of t-shirts with the selected text written on the back in a font consistent across each of the shirts. This contrast will highlight how the shape of letters can add meaning to the words we read.
There was some great design here so if you're in the area you should definitely go check it out. If not, you can always have a look at the websites of the designers involved. Thanks Lucky Gallery, for the free t-shirt and the beers!

Today I went to see Swiss Miss designer Tina Roth Eisenberg speak at Parsons School of Design. She talked about her journey from Switzerland to try to find a design internship in New York with hardley any contacts at all (sounds very familiar). A girl from work gave me a tip about a great art supplies shop in Greenwich Village. It's called Artists pick Blick and has 2 floors filled with everything you ever could wish for in an art shop. It's quite a bit cheaper than regular retail prices PLUS there's a big holiday sale going on until Dec 24th PLUS you get a 10 % student discount. They also have free greeting card and ornament making workshops going on until Christmas. I've fallen in love with this place.

Dorset Cereals short film

The Brief: Make a short film that sums up our belief: ‘simple, but then the best things in life usually are’. We are looking for innovative storytelling and all formats are considered including mobile phones. Once you’ve made your video and uploaded it here on our website, it’s over to the great British public (and your friends and family) to vote for their favourites.

Entry fee: Free!

Prize: £5000 and a week’s work experience at a top film production company, and the two runners up will receive £2000 each.

Tomorrow I officially move from Nyköping, Sweden to Brooklyn, New York! Here are the answers to the questions I've been getting from most people:

1. No, I don't know where I'm going to live yet. I have one week booked at a hostel in Williamsburg and i'll start looking for a place to stay when I get there. All tips welcome!
2. Yes, I'm coming home to Sweden for Christmas. I haven't been this excited about Christmas since I was about 5!
3. The design agency I'm going to be at is called MSLK in Queens. They're about 6 people at the agency and work with beauty and fashion branding and are really into sustainable design. More to come on the agency when I get there of course!
4. My internship is about 3 1/2 months so I'll be coming home to Sweden again on March 20th to finish up the last two weeks of school and our final exhibition. After that I'm free to work!

Splice Today: a lesson for Aol.

I remember seeing an idea similar to Aol.s logo a while back, but that actually works. The reason: there's a strong, well thought out idea behind it. Unlike Aol. who don't really seem to have a message or basically any reason at all for their shifting logotyp, Post Typography have created a user-generated logo for Splice Today that the readers themselves can be a part of. They explain it like this:

Rather than a single logo, the emerging web magazine Splice Today has a constantly growing database of logos that are drawn and submitted by the website's users. Making the most of Splice's online format and forward-thinking editorial stance, this flexible identity system lives on the web without the typical constraints of print publications.

And that makes all the difference. Because it's so easy to see right through an idea with out any substance, we're not that easily fooled.

AOL to aol. We don't buy it.

AOL has rebranded themselves as Aol. and have unfortunately failed miserably, again and again. Looking at their Brand Identity sneak preview video really explains where it all went wrong: "Hey look at this crazy stuff. Paint's flying in the air, people are rocking out! Look how hip and cool we are. Yeah!" This new ever-changing logo just makes me feel like AOL (oh sorry, Aol.) is a company that is so unsure of themselves that they thought this would be a safe bet that would appeal to everyone. Nice try.

Beck + Charlotte = LOVE

This is a happy, happy day! I can't believe I haven't heard that the magnificent Beck is producing the sweet Charlotte Gainsbourgh's new album. I just got a glimpse of the completely insane video for their new single "Heaven Can Wait", which is already stuck in my head. I could go on and on but it's better if you just have a look for yourself.

Can't wait for the album due to come out January 26th.

Bauhaus Archive

Back from a few full-packed days in Berlin which was basically history lessons by day, grungy underground clubbing by night. Apart from all the amazing graffiti everywhere I would have to say that one of the most inspirational design elements was our visit to the Bauhaus museum. The Bauhaus school used to be one of the most influential schools of architecture, design, and art of the 20th century only operating from 1919-1933. The Bauhaus Archive now holds a collection of pieces produced at the school. One of my favorite designers, Josef Albers, was a student there.

New Work: Kungsholmens Kontorshotell

Kungsholmens Kontorshotell in Stockholm was founded in 2007 and offers service office spaces to small and medium-sized enterprises. For our final degree project we were asked to present a new logotype, website and corporate identity, including: business cards, brochure, envelopes and templates for invoice, news letter and sell sheet. You can see our final project in my web portfolio.

Rickard and Hans treated us to a nice big dinner at Grill where we feasted on meat and cocktails.

At Stockholm Stadsmuseum they have an exhibition on typical attributes of homes from different decades. I especially liked these different wallpapers along with illustrations of typical furniture from that era. Very nice!

Objectified - A documentary about objects

I finally got a hold of Objectified. At first I was afraid that it was just going to be an homage to Apple and minimalistic design but they went through several different views on design from objects that you wear in not wear out, to sustainable design and the problems with our consumer society. Definitely worth a look.

To Three, or not to Three.

I have a conundrum.
I’ve been a Three customer since they first came to Sweden about 6 years ago. I keep renewing my contract because I really like Three; they have reasonable prices, the latest mobiles and a kick-ass customer service.
The thing is: most of the time, they suck! The memory card in my phone often slips out, they always have the most annoying, bizarre adverts:

now and then I can’t get any reception on my phone for no apparent reason and finally, I’ve been living in an apartment for about a year now and not once(!) been able to use my mobile internet. This is of course unacceptable. I can’t get any reception on my internet (or phone for that matter) anywhere in the flat and although Three have tried to be very helpful in getting this solved there just doesn’t seem to be any solution. And since I have an 18 month contract my only other choice is to pay the rest of my upcoming bills in one go (about 1400 kr) and end my contract.
So I guess the question is: why do I stick with Three all these years even though they are truly inferior to several other brands. Well I guess I’m just used to them. It’s probably for the same reasons why I would never choose Milko over Arla, Tropicana before Godmorgon or god forbid Findus instead of Heinz. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: branding.

Today I was asked to write down what my future goals are.
By 2020 I will have:
Worked abroad at least one year (within graphic design of course).
Made my own typeface.
Won a design award.
Visit Tokyo with my brother while he's making big bucks as an illustrator (I see a great future for him too).

After watching yet another inspirational talk from the great Stefan Sagmeister I think I'll add one more thing to my list:
Take a year off to only do inspirational and creative things.

Passing by a shop window in Nyköping I happened to see a great pattern by Lotta Odelius. She is one of the many designers for the Nordic design company Sagaform. Lovely!
